After the summer holidays, one of the busiest periods of the year starts: the months leading to the huge peak of sales for Christmas, a period which usually coincides with the launch of a series of new bottlings. Actually, for us the effort started much earlier, with samples tasting, cask selection and planning which have been going on for all the previous months of the year (and also part of the year before). But yes, this is actually the time when you are finally able to see the fruits of our unstoppable work!
As it often happens, we choose this period to launch some innovative bottlings, to introduce some interesting new concepts and give a new touch of freshness to our beloved classic line: the Barrel Selection.

Young but very intense, this very traditional Highlands single malt was entirely matured in a rejuvenated hogshead: a second fill cask that was internally shaved, toasted and recharred. The effect of this kind of barrels is not as strong as new oak, but more intense than refill. It’s a robust bodied malt, with great freshness of heather honey, cereals, flowers at the nose, but there is also a quizzical note which becomes even more evident on the palate. Immediately, at the first sip, a light touch of smokiness enriches the malty fragrance. The toasted note from the cask imparts a hint of liquorice, of black bread, to the malty and waxy character of the whisky. In the finale, it grows peppery and more tannic, with the toasted notes turning into a delicately ashy aftertaste.

A particularly long finish for 48 months in a first fill Oloroso cask was the perfect touch for this crisp Speyside malt from a very old-fashioned distillery: in spite of the exuberance of young age, it’s already extremely complex and multifaceted. At the nose, as expected, the first impact is very winey, spicy, with that typical dry, astringent and nutty note of Oloroso. It’s peppery, hot, with plenty of red cherries: sherry monster galore! But it’s at the palate that it really shows its maturity and nuance (maybe with the help of a drop of water): yes, it’s winey and spicy, but also extremely biscuity. Toasted cereals, freshly baked bread, a hint of strongly brewed tea, always with a robust mineral backbone. It grows again toward a peppery, nutty and oaky side towards the end, but it remains dry, firm and crisp.

Young and old… but always GOLD!

While only started in 2019, the Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition is already considered one of the most influential spirits contests all over the world. The reason for its importance is simple: it involves a large number of industry experts in its panel of judges (259 tasters for this edition!), and it is organized in a very structured and professional way. First a session of remote tastings at the beginning of the year, then a second session in Tokyo at the end of spring: all the spirits are tasted blindly, each of them is evaluated by at least eight jurors, and the result is complete fairness and impartiality of the results. Only taste matters in the end!
The ambitious goal of the competition is to rigorously judge all kinds of fine spirits: traditional Japanese ones, but also the best spirits from the rest of the world. This year the total amount of submissions was 832, a really impressive amount! Ron Millonario entered the competition with our two extremes: the fresh, light and young 10 Aniversario Reserva, and the rich, sweet, luxurious and very mature Millonario XO. Two very different bottlings that encompass the opposites in our range: a rum made for easy drinking and cocktails, and our behemoth meant for slow meditative tasting, maybe paired with a cigar. But in our opinion, both are of the highest quality, regardless of age and price point. And we are happy to see that the Japanese jury agrees with us, because they both received the same award!

Fully matured in a hogshead that been shaved, toasted and recharred (the first experiment of this kind for us), this Highlands single malt showcases the purity and cleanness of style of the spirit, with only a medium touch of oak from the cask. At the nose it’s rich with cereals, fresh and flowery, with a nice malty intensity and a touch of honey. The style remains true to the classic Highlands approach at the taste, too: firm, honeyed and mineral at the same time, with a touch of beeswax but also a dry tannic backbone to compensate the sweetness. The interplay between heather, chamomile, white pepper and herbal notes is particularly appetizing. The pepper, the mineral note and the tight tannins build in intensity towards the finale.

Winey, oaky and very aromatic, this Speyside malt was enhanced for 42 months in a first fill Pedro Ximenez barrel. It’s quite a long finish, considering the use of a fresh cask, and the result is obviously very influenced by the wine: this is already noticeable from the nose, but it’s not a fruity and overly sweet sherry bomb. On the contrary, it remains quite dark and balsamic in style: notes of vermouth, orange peel, aperitif bitters. There is some nutty astringency, but the pepper and the tannic intensity win. It’s just as balsamic, dark and oaky at the palate too: a very tannic, winey, nutty attack, but with water it finally reveals a juicy sweetness of dried plums, orange peel and candied fruit. Only moderately raisiny, it remains rich, enveloping, darkly winey and chewy in the finale too, with a touch of camphor and aromatic herbs, and a warm and muscular style.

Another winning streak in Japan

And since we are quite confident of our own taste in selecting whisky casks… well, it’s nice to see that the Japanese experts agree with us!
So, once again, we came home with a nice handful of medals… Of all the 832 spirits that entered the competition, Wilson & Morgan received a prize for all of the four entries which had been submitted.

Our Panama 21 recently received the prestigious gold medal, from the 2024 Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition. A true honour, and in our humble opinion, well deserved for this outstanding rum.
Other than this gold medal, Panama 21 has also previously been awarded a gold medal from the 2022 London Spirits Competition, as well as been named Rum of the Year at the 2022 London Spirits Competition. A truly great rum, that keeps receiving the recognition it deserves.

Enriched by a finish for 30 months in first fill Pedro Ximenez, this very traditional Speyside single malt is quite characterized by the sherry, thanks to the accelerated contact with the walls of the cask offered by the choice of a hogshead compared to the slower maturation imparted by large butts. In spite of the sweet character of the dessert Spanish wine, the result is actually very dry, and even a touch astringent. The impact of the sherry at the first olfactory impression is explosive: definitely a blast of nutty and wine aromas! Also at the palate, it’s a real sherry bomb: tight, spicy, lively and with an oxidative style that is more reminiscent of Oloroso. It becomes even drier and astringent in the aftertaste.

Gold in Paris!

On May 4-6th, Ron Millonario attended the 10th edition of Rhum Fest Paris, as usual: we have attended all the editions, and this year we had the killer team of our flamboyant brand ambassadors Mario Navarro, Marie El Hanafi and Diego Mioto to dazzle the audience with cocktails and straight rum tastings. What could go wrong?

Well, as expected it was a success! We had a tactical organization at the fair, with two stands: one at the entrance, with Marie and Elisa catching the interest of the visitors, enticing them into the world of Millonario. Marie and Elisa had some fantastic cocktails, to tickle the fancy of anyone who tasted them. What was the secret ingredient? Millonario, of course! And that was the alluring secret which led to the discovery of the second stand, where the rums could be tasted neat: the new sweet and fruity Kuytchi and the classic XO have been the most appreciated ones.
